Lakes Area Music Festival presents “The Great American Songbook”

BRAINERD — The Lake District Music Festival kicks off its fall lineup with a concert of vocal jazz and showtunes featuring audience favorite Broadway soprano Andrea Ross.

The show will take place at the Gichi-ziibi Arts Center in Brainerd from 7:30 p.m. on Friday, September 30.

Ross will bring a program of familiar tunes from the Great American Songbook – jazz standards, pop songs and showtunes from the early decades of the 20th century, including Gershwin, Cole Porter and more. For more information, visit https://bit.ly/3C9N2ch.

She starred as Maria in the Broadway tour of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music” and began her career in her hometown of Boston and came to the attention of legendary Broadway composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, who became his mentor.

Webber and Universal Music Group: Classics and Jazz produced Andrea’s solo album, “Moon River”, which debuted in the Top 50 of the UK charts.

Ross has been a featured soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Utah Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra and KBS Symphony Orchestra in Seoul, South Korea.

She first performed at the Lakes Area Music Festival in 2021 with a tribute to Judy Garland, and was featured with the LAMF Symphony in songs from “West Side Story” at the 2022 Season Opening Gala. .

Pequot Lakes Community Theater Announces Cast of “You Can’t Take It With You”

PEQUOT LAKES — The Pequot Lakes Community Theater is rehearsing for its upcoming production of ‘You Can’t Take It With You,’ an Oscar-winning and Pulitzer Prize-winning romantic comedy.

“You Can’t Take It With You” opened on Broadway at the Booth Theater on December 14, 1936. A smash hit, the show ran for 838 performances and returned to Broadway five times, most recently in 2014.

“You’ll laugh until your sides hurt as Alice, from an eccentric family of carefree misfits, falls in love with her employer’s son, the gentleman product of stuffy, snobbish parents. And when the members of the two disparate clans meet, there are fireworks,” according to a press release.

Performances of “You Can’t Take It With You” will be at 7 p.m. on October 7 and 8 and October 14 and 15; and at 2 p.m. on October 9 and 16 at the Pequot Lakes High School auditorium.
